Shidler Leadership Talks: Resonance Marketing

Information technology has profoundly altered the market for export products in all categories, from consumables like beer and jeans to durable goods like electronics and automobiles. Where once Americans all purchased status symbols, moving up from inexpensive automobiles to Lincolns and Cadillacs and moving to larger houses as public demonstrations of wealth and status, consumption is shifting to providing private delight. Changes in manufacturing technologies allow producers to meet the needs of individual consumers. Changes in online awareness have reduced the need for advertising, allowing consumers to locate the products that provide their perfect delight.
Producers that master these changes will capture multiple high-margin sweet spots. Those that do not master these changes will be reduced to defending low margin commodities.
